Large supermarkets stopped accepting online orders due to overload

The epidemic situation is very complicated now, many localities have to prolong social distancing, causing a sudden increase in people's demand for food and foodstuff. Many online sales channels of supermarkets and e-commerce sites have reported overloading and stopped accepting more orders.

Supermarkets stop receiving online orders

The above situation appeared after information from 0:00 on August 23, Ho Chi Minh City will apply stricter and more drastic measures which encourage citizens to stay at home and only go out whenever having urgent situations to prevent the COVID-19 epidemic. According to the announcement on the Big C&Go app on August 21, this supermarket would like to temporarily stop accepting online orders to ensure service quality when the number of online orders has increased sharply in recent days.

The same situation also occurs with the online shopping application of Saigon Co.op, with the message when customers enter to choose to buy products: “The supermarket is temporarily closed. Please try another supermarket or come back the next day”.

On the online shopping app of Bach Hoa Xanh, fresh foods are sold out, the remaining items are scheduled to be delivered within 4 days or more. ShopeeFood also announced that it may not be possible to order due to a shortage of delivery drivers and asked for customers’ understanding.

Besides, Lotte Mart’s online shopping app SPEED L has also stopped accepting new orders.

Difficulties piling up difficulties

Currently, the number of online and traditional orders has increased 3-4 times compared to weekdays. Therefore, many items are temporarily out of stock.

At the online sales channels of supermarkets, most of the green vegetables cannot be ordered because they are temporarily out of stock, leaving only a few varieties such as peppers, okra, carrots and pumpkins.

According to direct records at supermarkets and convenience stores, consumers mainly focus on buying fresh foods such as meat, fish, eggs, vegetables and many foodstuffs such as dried noodles, vermicelli, frozen goods, milk, etc.

In recent days, big supermarkets in Ho Chi Minh City such as Co.op Mart, Big C, MM Mega Market, etc. all recorded a high number of visitors compared to the previous days, the shopping cart value also increased compared to weekdays. On average, the purchase invoice is worth from 1.8 million VND or more while on weekdays it is only around 1.2 million VND. Some supermarkets are applying strict distancing measures, causing customers to have to stand in a queue and wait for hours to enter the supermarket.

To solve the shortage, supermarkets also said that they have prepared plans to increase meat, green vegetables and essential foods to meet people’s needs. In addition, customers are advised to stay calm and comply with epidemic prevention regulations when participating in shopping.
