Doubled the size of the Atlanta relief center
Amazon.com Inc. said on June 1 it had doubled the size of its Atlanta facility. It is known that this is a specialized facility for storage and distribution of emergency supplies to support disaster relief efforts. According to Amazon, the facility will be expanded by 20,000 feet of order fulfillment space and will store approximately 1 million relief supplies, doubling its storage capacity compared to before.
The relief supplies provided by Amazon included tarpaulins, tents, water tanks and filters, medical equipment, clothing, and kitchen utensils. These are all essential items to promptly meet the essential supply needs at the early stage of any natural or man-made disaster relief effort.
Relief and disaster response efforts
Since 2017, Amazon has begun to explore and seek disaster relief solutions. Emergency teams usually evaluate available supplies, procure required items, then pack, pack and ship supplies to disaster areas. This may take a few days, but Amazon’s positioning strategy improves the time it takes to get the goods to where they need it.
Atlanta lies 310 miles from the Gulf Coast, 734 miles from the Bahamas, and about 1,535 miles from Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands – areas that experience the strongest hurricane season. The advantage of geographic distance helps Amazon community partners to respond quickly to storms, floods, and other natural disasters. Abe Diaz, head of Amazon’s disaster relief efforts, said in an interview with FreightWaves last August that the facility would reduce the time Amazon spends 75 percent on purchasing and packaging supplies. grant.
