On October 17, the container terminal project at Tianjin seaport in northern China began to operate after 21 months of construction. In particular, this container port is applied to smart, zero-carbon technologies.
Mr. Chu Bin, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tianjin Port Company Limited (Group) said that this is the first “smart” and “carbon-free” container port, a step forward in upgrading and developing smart ports with low-carbon globally.
The port’s “intelligent brain” is based on AI technology, which can automatically come up with the best cargo handling plans and control each device in detail, resulting in 20% higher efficiency than other traditional container ports.
This smart container terminal is also equipped with horizontal transport intelligent robots that apply various sensors such as laser radar, camera, and mm-wave radar. The operations center with the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System located at the port which enhances positioning with high accuracy with the help of 5G technology.
This smart container terminal operates on energy from wind and photovoltaic power instead of fossil fuel. Its energy consumption can be 17% lower than traditional automatic container terminals. In addition, the port is designed to handle 2.5 million TEU containers/year.
This zero-carbon container port is a typical representative of the seaport development trend in the world to control pollutants, use economically and efficiently energy, prevent environmental risks, and minimize impacts from climate change.
