Export turnover increased sharply
According to Undercurrent News, Vietnam’s pangasius exports to China in November increased the most this year. The export volume of pangasius products increased to more than 78 thousand tons (equivalent to 44.4% compared to October). However, this is still about 1,000 tons lower than the same period last year.
Previously, in the period of July and August, due to the influence of the Covid-19 wave in Vietnam, the amount of pangasius exported to China dropped sharply from 60,000 to 40,000 tons.
For the EU, ASEAN markets, import volumes are also on the rise. Meanwhile, demand in the US market fell in November after recovering strongly in October.
According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), pangasius export turnover will reach about $1.54 billion, up 3% compared to 2020. In which, China is still the leading market, accounting for 28% of Vietnam’s pangasius export. Pangasius importers said that the price of this country’s freshwater fish in the first half of this year increased sharply, so Vietnamese pangasius is still a steamed substitute seafood product. guide.
Next, the US market is in second place with 22%. The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers forecasts that pangasius exports to the US market will continue to increase due to a decrease in US domestic production and high prices of seafood in the US.
In addition, pangasius exports are forecast to continue to grow through the FTAs that continue to be a lever for trade promotion to many markets, especially potential small markets such as Mexico, Brazil, Russia, Colombia, Thailand, etc.
Fear of lack of raw materials
Although pangasius export still maintains its target in 2021, with great fluctuations in the 8 months of the COVID-19 epidemic, the pangasius industry has been heavily impacted and affected the stocking of raw fish. for the next job.
Nhu Van Can, Director of the Aquaculture Department of the Directorate of Fisheries, said that the area for raising pangasius in July, August, and September decreased by 30-55% compared to the same period in 2020 due to many localities having to implement social distancing. However, the farming area in the months of March, April, May, June and October increased sharply compared to the same period in 2020.
If the speed of farming and stocking is not accelerated, it is forecasted that the source of raw materials for processing and exporting in the first quarter of 2022 may be in short supply. To ensure the supply of raw materials for processing and export, the pangasius industry is planning to reach over 5,200 hectares of the raised farming area; commercial pangasius production reached over 1.7 million tons by 2022.
The Directorate of Fisheries is stepping up direction to organize the production of seed and input materials to serve the demand for stocking at the beginning of the year to ensure raw materials for processing for the whole year of 2022. The area for raising pangasius in December is estimated at 330 hectares, requiring about 200 million fingerlings.
