Paradox: Supermarket beer is cheaper than dealer beer
Recorded in Ho Chi Minh City, Heineken’s price increased from 404,000 VND/barrel to 414,000, Tiger from 336,000 VND to the highest at 362,000 VND/barrel. However, the price of Tiger beer has cooled down to 352,000 VND/barrel this week, but still high compared to the early months of 2022.
The causes are said to be the influence of gasoline prices, the increase in input material prices, leading to the surge in the prices of many items, especially beer, in addition to an increase in the price of imports from agencies.
Difficulties for beer enterprises
Vietnam’s beer industry is heavily affected by the Covid-19 epidemic and the Government’s strict regulations on beer marketing and advertising, regulations on 3 types of taxes: import tax, value added tax and excise tax.
Under the impact, beer companies announced to increase prices to offset the increased cost of raw materials. For instance, on February 4, Carlsberg Brewing Company (Denmark) said it would raise beer prices in 2022.
Sabeco, which owns the Saigon beer brand, is positive that the reopening of food and beverage services can help increase consumption of beer and other alcoholic beverages. However, the rising price of input materials, the scarcity of goods, the increase in freight charges along with the fierce competition among beer brewing companies for market share have made the beer business continuously difficult.
Short-term solution
Some supermarkets choose to limit sales because of the lack of supply. At MM Mega Market An Phu supermarket, Thu Duc, in the beverage area on the beer shelf, customers were surprised when they saw the message: “Because of the limited quantity, each customer with a membership card is limited. Buy up to two boxes or 8 packs/invoice/day”. A representative of MM Mega Market admitted that at present, some supermarkets in the chain have to limit because of low stock levels. This is a temporary solution that can be implemented to ensure product diversity.
