Empty containers and their effects
Over the past 2 years, the world has witnessed the situation of empty containers filling up ports and warehouses, making the transportation system congested. Specifically, in 2021, Business Insider recorded more than 110,000 empty containers occupying the Southern California port, the largest seaport in the United States.
Not only that, moving empty containers also costs a lot. According to estimates from Drewry, nearly 27% of the 862 million containers worldwide will be empty without cargo. And to transport them to the place where they are loaded, the cost is estimated to cost about 20 billion USD.
The big change of containers over the decades
Facing the above situation, Staxxon, a start-up company in the US, has designed a container that can be folded up to 1/5 of the size of conventional containers from 6m to 12m. Thus, in the same space, instead of an empty container taking up space, one can now fit 5 boxes. Staxxon has planned to commercialize this product as soon as this year, now the company has allowed buyers to deposit in advance for $ 100 per container. This initiative will be the key for transport businesses and shippers to increase capacity, while solving the problem of port congestion, saving costs and protecting the environment.
Mr. Shao Hung Goh, Lecturer in Logistics and Supply Chain at Singapore University of Social Sciences, said that carriers can save up to 57% in domestic transportation costs by using folding containers, right away. even at the expense of replacing traditional containers.
This will also be the first update of the container in decades. The first container was designed in 1956 by Malcolm McLean – the head of one of the largest trucking companies in the US. The containers were then standardized by the International Maritime Organization as they are today.
