Lychees volume in the North is estimated to increase by 9.68% compared to 2020
The North is the largest lychee granary in the country with more than 53,000 hectares, accounting for 97.4% of the total area of the country. The yield is about 5 tons/hectare and the harvest time is from May to July. In 2021, the total lychee production in the North is estimated at 340,000 tons, an increase of about 30,000 tons compared to 2020, corresponding to a growth rate of 9.68%. Early-harvested lychees reached about 90,000 tons, while main-season lychees reached 250,000 tons, accounting for 26,5% and 73.5% separately.
In terms of area, Bac Giang province is the largest lychee growing area in the country (mainly in Luc Ngan district), reaching 28,100 hectares with an expected production of 180,000 tons, accounting for 52.94% of the whole country. Hai Duong follows with 9,168 hectares, which is famous for its sweet, cool, thick, succulent flesh and small seeds Thanh Ha lychees. Hai Duong lychees production is expected to reach 55,000 tons, accounting for 16.18% of the whole country. Other provinces with large growing areas are Quang Ninh (1,635 hectares) and Hung Yen (1,400 hectares).
Optimistic outlook for Vietnamese lychees consumption in the international market
In recent years, Vietnamese lychees with characteristic delicious taste have affirmed its position in key markets such as the United States, China, Korea, Singapore,… Farmers have been guided about standards and technical regulations during the cultivation processes to be certified VietGap, GlobalGap,… making their lychees eligible to export to strict markets such as the EU, Japan, Australia, etc…
Speaking at the Conference of connecting and promoting consumption of Thanh Ha lychees and typical agricultural products of Hai Duong province in 2021, Mr. Le Minh Hoan, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development highly appreciated Hai Duong’s efforts during the Covid-19 pandemic with a new mindset in production and consumption of agricultural products, creating a certain spillover and competitiveness in the domestic and international markets. At this time, farmers growing lychees by VietGAP standards in Thanh Lanh village, Thanh Quang commune (Thanh Ha district, Hai Duong province) begin to harvest early lychees, which will be purchased for 60,000-80,000 VND/kg. In 2021, it is expected that Hai Duong’s total lychees production will be consumed domestically about 33,000 tons and exported about 22,000 tons which made the lychee export rate in 2021 to increase by about 5% over the previous year.
The Vietnam Trade Office in Australia has worked with fresh agricultural traders to continue implementing the Brand Building and promoting the consumption of about 100 tons of Vietnamese lychees Program in Australia in 2021. The program’s specific contents includes connecting trade continuously throughout the season; appointing officers to coordinate in solving difficulties caused by import procedures in Australia; promoting and orienting consumers to familiarize with the color of lychees turning yellow due to irradiation; conducting demand-stimulating advertising in consumption areas; promoting the consumption of post-processed lychee products (canned, dried, frozen lychees) after the end of the season; mobilizing business associations and communities to enjoy and consume lychee in their homeland…
Furthermore, the Public Security Ministry has agreed to allow 190 Chinese traders to enter Vietnam to buy Bac Giang lychees.
Vietnamese lychees launched on E-commerce platforms
On May 18th, the Trade Promotion Department under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, the Department of Industry and Trade, and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hai Duong Province have officially signed a cooperation agreement “Program to put Hai Duong lychees and agricultural products on the e-commerce platform” with Lazada Vietnam. This is an important activity in promoting digital transformation for agribusiness businesses in Vietnam in the context of the current boom in e-commerce.
Accordingly, Lazada will apply fast delivery within 4 hours to ensure maximum freshness and unique flavor. Mr. James Dong, General Director of Lazada Vietnam, said that the initial success was nearly half a ton of Hai Duong province’s “u trứng trắng” lychees had been sold after only 4 hours of the first day on sale.
The event that litchi appears on e-commerce platforms is considered to contribute to opening a new sustainable output for localities, improving digital transformation capacity for production and business units, and at the same time promote the spirit of “Vietnamese people give priority to using Vietnamese goods”.
